Why are home burglaries on the rise when other property crimes are falling?

Property crimes are slowly declining according to the FBI stats but burglaries are up .6% from 2004 to 2006.

A home burglary happens every 15 seconds.

Most burglars are basically lazy, petty crooks looking for an easy score. They are looking for an easy way to make fast money. Cash and merchandise can be easily fenced for cash are the easiest ways to feed their drug habits and thus are high priority targets.

They do their best to avoid human contact. That's why most burglaries are done during the day when no one is at home.

With just a little homework called "casing" the neighborhood these crooks can pick and choose their targets-there are so many. Homeowners make it unbelievably easy. Most burglaries happen thru open windows or doors. No forced entry is even required.

Burglars may be many things but at least they can read. So if there is any 'sign' of a hard time they'll move onto another target. Isn't that what you want?

Burglars look for anything that signals a hard time like a sign for a security company, an NRA sign, a sign 'Beware of Dog' or basically anything warning of an obstacle including home security window stickers that sends them looking elsewhere.
